چکیده

Lagrangian feature tracking techniques are employed to determine the cause of the midwinter suppression of the Pacific storm track. It is found that the frequency of disturbances entering the Pacific storm track from mid-latitude Asia is substantially reduced (>25%) during wintertime relative to fall and spring. In contrast, the seasonal cycle of both the amplitude and the growth rate of individual disturbances show little to no wintertime reduction. The source of the reduction in the number of disturbances within the Pacific storm track appears to be fewer wintertime lee cyclones emanating from the Altai-Sayan mountains in Mongolia and north central China. The frequency of lee cyclogenesis in the lee of the these mountains is reduced (>30%) in winter relative to fall and spring, and this may be caused by changes in the geographical location of the jet-stream, which is far removed from the orography in winter.

Examining mechanisms of variability within the Pacific storm 1 track : upstream seeding and jet core strength

5 This paper examines how variations in two mechanisms, upstream seeding and jet core 6 strength, relate to storminess within the cold season (Oct Apr) Pacific storm track. It is 7 found that about 17% of observed storminess co-varies with the strength of the upstream 8 source, and the relationship is robust throughout the cold season and for both the Pacific 9 and Atlantic basins. Further anal...

Nature of the Differences in the Intraseasonal Variability of the Pacific and Atlantic Storm Tracks: A Diagnostic Study

On the basis of an intraseasonal variability index of storm track evaluated for 40 winters (1963–64 through 2003–04) of NCEP–NCAR reanalysis data, it is found that well-defined midwinter minimum [MWMIN; (midwinter maximum MWMAX)] occurs in 21 (8) winters over the North Pacific. In contrast, MWMIN (MWMAX) occurs in 4 (25) of the 40 winters over the North Atlantic. The power spectrum of such an i...

Effects of Variations in East Asian Snow Cover on Modulating Atmospheric Circulation over the North Pacific Ocean

At least four different modeling studies indicate that variability in snow cover over Asia may modulate atmospheric circulation over the North Pacific Ocean during winter. Here, satellite data on snow extent for east Asia for 1971–95 along with atmospheric fields from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction–National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis are used to examine whethe...

Interannual to Decadal Variability in Climate and the Glacier Mass Balance in Washington, Western Canada, and Alaska*

The authors examine the net winter, summer, and annual mass balance of six glaciers along the northwest coast of North America, extending from Washington State to Alaska. The net winter (NWB) and net annual (NAB) mass balance anomalies for the maritime glaciers in the southern group, located in Washington and British Columbia, are shown to be positively correlated with local precipitation anoma...

A Linear Stochastic Model of a GCM’s Midlatitude Storm Tracks

A linear stochastic model is used to simulate the midlatitude storm tracks produced by an atmospheric GCM. A series of six perpetual insolation/SST GCM experiments are first performed for each month. These experiments capture the ‘‘midwinter suppression’’ of the Pacific storm track in a particularly clean way. The stochastic model is constructed by linearizing the GCM about its January climatol...
